SAN DIEGO, June 2, 2010 - The 76 California Western School of Law graduates who passed the February Bar exam were given the opportunity to participate in the Oath of Professional Conduct this morning, prior to the State Bar of California Swearing-In Ceremony at 10:00 a.m. at the Westin Gaslamp Quarter.
Oath of Professional Conduct
The Oath of Professional Conduct is taken by California Western graduates as a vow to conduct themselves and their legal career with integrity and a high degree of professional responsibility. Alumni who are members of the judiciary administer the Oath.
Judges Anthony J. Battaglia '74, Robert C. Coates '70, Judith L. Haller '75, Kevin R. O'Neil, JAGC, USN '05, and Michael B. Orfield '77 all administered the Oath. Dean Steven R. Smith thanked each of the judges for giving their time to the law school and recognized Battaglia's recent nomination to the U.S. Court by President Obama.
Distinguished Speakers
Speakers at the Oath of Professional Conduct included Patrick L. Hosey '92, President of the San Diego County Bar Association, and Tara D. Shah '01, Immediate Past President of the Alumni Association Board of Directors.
Hosey reflected on the changes in the law school experience over the 18 years since his graduation, retelling his own story of waiting to get his results from the Bar exam. While the law school experience has changed over time, Hosey assured Bar passers that service to the community and the profession are as valuable as ever.
California Western Associate Deans William Aceves and Laura Padilla also addressed California Western's newest members of the State Bar, encouraging them to continue serving their communities and the legal profession as they embark on their careers.
Rewarding Careers
The Oath of Professional Conduct is a unique event among law schools. Through the Oath, California Western demonstrates its commitment to educating principled advocates with the skills and perspective that make a lasting impact on their communities.
As suggested by Hosey, this commitment to community enriches the professional experience and serves as a foundation to a rewarding career.
"No matter who you are, no matter what your passion is, no matter where you end up in your profession," says Hosey, "it will not be complete until you have given your time, and your talents, and back to the community." |
