Each year, the Alumni Association Board of Directors selects a California Western program as the beneficiary of Alumni Weekend proceeds. Over the past three years our alumni have raised more than $65,000 for the Community Law Project, Advanced Mediation Program and Street Law San Diego, programs benefiting our community.

This year, the board voted to select two programs as both were equally worthy of our support. Proceeds from Alumni Weekend 2010 will be split evenly between the California Innocence Project and Proyecto ACCESO, two programs dedicated to changing lives in our community and around the world. Both programs offer California Western students the opportunity to combine classroom learning with real-world experience and develop the knowledge, skills, and perspective to build rewarding careers.

California Innocence Project

California Western School of Law is home to the California Innocence Project. Students at California Western work to free wrongfully convicted inmates by reviewing more than 2,000 claims of innocence each year and focusing on cases where there is evidence of actual innocence. Innocence Project attorneys and students then investigate cases by securing expert witnesses and advocating for their clients during evidentiary hearing and trials.

Proyecto ACCESO

Proyecto ACCESO at California Western School of Law is a Latin American center for training lawyers, judges, law students, government officials and community leaders in the skills of oral advocacy, problems solving and other forms of conflict resolution. With Latin America fast becoming a major trading bloc, it is in the interest of the U.S. government and its business sector that the Americas be governed by the rule of law and that all parties have access to justice.

Gifts generated from the 2010 California Western Alumni Weekend are split evenly between the California Innocence Project and Proyecto ACCESO and are used for respective program expenses. All approved expenditures and distributions from this fund will be made until the entirety of funds, including investment gains or losses, have been distributed.
